The New Idiom of Daily Life

Recently, all my communications classes have started to make me feel really guilty.  Guilty about the fact that I willingly allow myself to become co-opted into buying more things, into this vicious cycle of consumerism that undoubtedly has no end, at least as we know it.  It’s strange because I’ve known for so long that buying things don’t make me happy.  Consumption, or at least impulse buying, only ever gives me a temporary dose of happiness, and after that brief two or three hours I feel the same.

Yet I continue to participate in this horrible, horrible cycle of consumerism that is not only causing me to participate in this system that essentially promises discontent, but also creates a ridiculous amount of waste.  It’s destroying our earth.  And us.  And yet we all continue to do it.

Part of the reason I am discussing this now is because of the recent news that a man got trampled at a Wal-Mart during Black Friday sales.  I think this is a perfect example of consumerism (at its finest?); that people are able to do something so horrible to another human being and not be concerned or show remorse for their role in the accident.  I know that it’s likely that the media sensationalized this, but the fact remains: that people just continued shopping.  That makes me sick.  It really, really makes me sick.

It’s in losing our ability to care for others that we become less human, I think.

Today, or this week

I’ve gotten all my midterms back and I’ve gotten an A on all of them – 93%, 90%, 87%, 86%.  I’m pretty pleased with myself; next stop: straight As!  I know I can do it.  Let’s hope I can 🙂

Today I almost got fucking hit by a car, it was actually possibly one of the scariest moments of my life.  I was waiting to cross the street at Cambie, and the light was starting to change and I could see a car a little ways away.  I figured that he would stop, seeing as the light was changing and he wasn’t going to make it across the intersection before it changed to red.  Well, he totally didn’t.  And since I was listening to my iPod, and I totally space out when I listen to my iPod (I know, my bad) I didn’t realize he didn’t stop until I was about 3/4 the way across the street and I was like, “what the heck, why are there lights on me all of a sudden” and then it dawned on me and I walked like two steps faster before the driver slammed on his brakes, stopping about 2 feet away from me.  I was SO FUCKING PISSED OFF – I just stopped and looked at the driver with a “WHAT THE FUCK?” face.  And all the other drivers were looking too!  And then when I finished crossing the street, he sped off and ran the red light.  I can’ t believe people who drive like this are allowed to.  And worse yet that we have no laws that stop people from getting distracted while driving say, on their cell phone.  Ugh.

So Obama won, like I thought he would.  I didn’t have much of an opinion on this election just because I didn’t really get to research tons about it.  Though I’m aware that as our neighbour, an American election is important to Canada, I didn’t really feel like it was important enough for me to really do research like I did for our own election.  That said, I do have high hopes for him and hope that he brings change to America, I feel like they really need it; however, I doubt that it’ll be easy for him to do so.  Hopefully he’s not all talk.

Another plus of the day: my credit card bill was a lot less than I thought it’d be!  And also, I switched my fido plan recently, so instead of paying like 50 dollars a month for 100 text messages, 150 daytime minutes, and unlimited evenings and weekends from 5 pm, I’m paying 30 dollars a month (without system access fee and 911 fee!) for unlimited text messages, 100 daytime minutes, and unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 5.  It’s a really good deal!  Plus tax it’s around 33 dollars I think, so I’m pretty pleased that I’m saving a lot of money.  I used to always go over my text messaging limit and end up having to pay an extra 10-15 dollars, so on top of the 50 dollar fee for my old plan, I’d have to pay for the extra text messages AND system access fee and 911 charge.  It really sucked.

School post # 1029410928412

I’m sorry that I talk about school so much but really, it’s the biggest activity that I am involved in currently which explains why I discuss it so much.  Anyways, from hereon it’s a rant…about school…so stop reading if you are sick of my complaining (sorry…it’ll end after October, I promise…this month has just been crazy with a capital C).

I have an exam tomorrow for EASC and I know – trust me, I do! – that I have to stop expecting good teaching because that’s not what I pay for (even though IT SHOULD BE what I pay for!) but I’m sick of having bad professors in science!  This prof (who shall remain nameless, because I know he’s a nice guy, he just sucks at teaching) has the worst lecture notes.  All the points are fragmented sentences that don’t really make sense.  And I felt that maybe my saviour in this course would be my textbook – which, though not without faults, makes a lot more sense than my teacher does – but I have just realized with the aid of my dearest friend Harry that the lecture notes are probably more important.  Fuck!

In addition, my other complaint about this class is that the lecture slides are so FULL OF PICTURES.  I get key images to describe points, but…honestly, the BACKGROUND is a picture.  THE BACKGROUND OF THE SLIDE IS A PICTURE!!!!  It’s a waste of ink, not to mention the fact that it makes it so freaking hard to read the actual text.

Argh that’s the end of my school rant for this week.

Yesterday William and I hung out and he showed me where he’s going!  It’s called Wurzburg I think, and the city looks amazing.  I’m actually quite jealous.  If only I could visit him for a week.  IF ONLY SFU HAD A READING BREAK.  Ahhh.

Back to studying!
